Group of State Legislators Urge ICE to Release Detained UC San Diego, DACA Student
SACRAMENTO – In response to the unfair detainment of Mr. Orr Yakobi, a University of California student and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program enrollee, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Mexico border, the California Legislative Jewish Caucus, sent a letter to ICE urging for his immediate release.
Mr. Orr Yakobi was a passenger in a vehicle that accidentally crossed the border on Monday after entering the wrong freeway onramp subsequently to leaving the Las Americas outlet mall in San Yisidro. The freeway then forced the car into Mexico where the driver turned around before being stopped by border patrol. Mr. Orr Yakobi had no intention of crossing the border, an action that violated the requirements of the DACA program. Crossing the border was clearly an accident, one that apparently happens with regularity after people leave this outlet mall.
